Primary Diagnostic Displays

Modern medical technology enables complex examinations. But in the end, it is the radiologist who is responsible for fast and accurate diagnostic findings. To support these findings in a soft copy reading environment, flat-panel displays need to comply with the highest visual requirements. Their image quality has a decisive influence on diagnostic accuracy.

NEC Display Solutions is setting new standards with Grayscale displays for filmless diagnostics, with technologies that are available for the first time in this market segment. This introduction of medical-grade displays is backed by years of experience in the development of TFT displays for professional use combined with intensive research done in the medical market.

NEC MD and MDView Series displays can be made DICOM Part 14 compliant, giving medical professionals the reassurance of an optimised and accurate image every diagnosis. In hospital wide PACS deployments NEC can ensure image consistency on every diagnostic display.

Features to look for when purchasing a diagnostic display

  • A high brightness, high contrast display increases the number of Just Noticeable Differences (JND) of grey tones, improving image quality. The maximum number of JNDs the human eye can perceive is 730, therefore displays offering 1024 are more than adequate for diagnostic use.
  • A display that allows calibration of on-screen brightness and whiteness (white colour) to ensure diagnostic image quality and consistency for the life of the product. The display should monitor these settings and make automatic adjustments without user intervention to ensure long term consistency.
  • Software should be provided with the display that enables the user (or network administrator) to check the displays on-going conformance to the DICOM Part 14 standard and to perform recalibration if required. The QA software should force Quality Control procedures to take place before reporting starts or at scheduled intervals as detailed in the DIN 6868-57 standard, AAPM TG18 and IPEM Report91 guidelines.
  • Diagnostic displays are long term critical investments. Diagnostic displays should be backed up with at least a 3 year warranty, with on-site service.
Displays used in a dual screen configuration or even displays within a department or hospital site should display images consistently. Make sure all diagnostic displays purchased can be easily matched in the field
